  1. I would recommend Reaper http://www.reaper.fm/ as a DAW which is apparently comparable to pro-tools and it seems a lot of ex-pro-tools users are going over to Reaper. OK it’s not free but you can download the full version for a 60 day trial and then it’s a bargain at $60 for unlimited upgrades. Comes with tons of VST’s and a great forum. If you want a professional DAW for next to nothing Reaper could be the way to go. A lot easier to use than say LMMS IF you read the manual and watch the hundreds of great tutorials on YouTube.

    1. From my understanding, Garageband comes by default on Macs. I have own 2 Macs that came with Garageband. Maybe older macs don’t have it by default. I can’t say for sure.

  2. Great List very helpful thank you, I wouldn’t mind trying a few myself..I have tried Reaper & didn’t like it (plus it’s not free), the interface was very confusing for me and that’s what you don’t want when it comes to making music, it should be a Farley easy and enjoyable process, not drying you nuts watching a ton videos on how to use the software itself..It just takes the fun away for me, and isn’t that what making music is about at the end of the day.. On the other hand Audacity & LMMS are fantastic, two very good open source (free) programs that don’t take a lot of getting your head around and Farley simple to use with great features too. I’m not surprised that these two are at the top of the list, 2 great programs..I have also been thinking about getting a Native Instruments Mk2 or Akai MPC Studio (for making some music) witch are both quite expensive for what they are really.. I have done a fare bit of research on them both, and to me I think they are just like having an expensive version Audacity & LMMS in one Program, with a midi controller to have control over the actual software (without using a mouse).. Yeah they might come with a few more plugins (sounds) or different effects, but hey it’s not hard to find free legit plugins online these days is it really and that just doesn’t warrant the price tag for me.
I just want to make some simple decent music why does it need to be so complicated & costly in 2015.

  3. So many of the above “Sequencers” look remarkably like they have “Borrowed” the look and Functionality from Sony’s Acid Pro series of Audio Suites ……..!!! (I have Acid Pro 4 , 5 , 6 and 7……I find 4 or 5 easiest to use , I also have a Genuine version of Cubase 5 VST. )
What I really want is a really simple sequencer that uses Sound Font Banks not Samples.(I have the old Evolution Audio one ——Sooooooooooo simple to program . I then just either creat my own SF2 banks , and import the Midi File or Song into Acid Pro…….Cubase is a Pig to use sometimes and prone to crashing .
Shame my evolution one is 16 bit (wont work on Windows 7 with 32 bit / 64 bit processor.
Also as pointed out below free does not always mean free – trial or limited functionality unless you upgrade to FULL or PRO versions…..£££ $$$ ……????

  4. After using Cubase and Magix and a couple of others, I bought the very reasonably priced Reaper. It’s a great platform. You can do anything you need with it, and it’s rock solid. I had to dump it though because of a very odd problem; my drums would speed up about 1 bar into the mix. It drove me crazy. Aside from that, I loved it and wished it had worked. I’m now using Sonar, which is pretty much a bait and switch operation. You think you’re getting all the bells and whistles with whatever version you buy, but you aren’t. If you want full functionality, prepare to shell out some money.

  5. Not included in the list above is “WavePad”, which is a Windows program. It not only has a Wav editor like Audacity, but a Mixer that allows multi-tracking, including audio and midi, with VST and VTSi functionality, called MixPad. And, it has a basic DJ deck, like Mixx (above), and even a standalone Vocal changer… Everything from reverb to formant changing and robotic effects. Not bad for free for personal use. (The three additions can be activated from within WavePad on the lower left box in the opening screen):

  11. What about the legal side? If one ever is successful in making music, is one liable to any legal action from the original track makers?
