This weeks sample is somewhat unique. And unfortunately for me this means it’s slightly harder to find out information on it.
The track in question is from Niraj Chag, who is a fairly new artist and despite contrary to popular belief, is actually from the UK. His style consists of merging classical Indian music with modern recording techniques to create a unique and almost atmospheric sound.

He has to-date only released one album entitled Along the Dusty Road which was praised locally for its originality, received airplay on BBC Radio and also was selected as the iTunes free download of June 2006. As well as his studio work he created his first musical ‘Baiju Bawra’, created original soundtracks for productions such as Sex and the City and also for plays, including Rafta, Rafta. However, his most notable achievement to date is that he put together an eclectic score for the official Olympic Torch event, on London’s South Bank featuring a massive 600 vocalists, opera singers and a 40-piece brass band. It seems that there is a bright future in store for this young, talented musician.
The sample we have for you today comes from his debut album and is entitled Kanya. According to his Official website this is “A track about youth. Using classical Indian dance (Kathak) vocabulary (here recited by Gauri Tripathi). I had a lot of fun playing with Gaurijis vocals – things were chopped, edited and put through filters to get the intricate rhythmic (vocal) layers I wanted for this track.”
So, without further ado I give you Niraj Chag – Kanya.
