Nicatyne is the first producer for the new Hip Hop Makers Producers Blog section.

I have been listening to this producer/rapper and his partner (Illecism from The Insomniaks) for a while. I have featured him previously in the free pick of the week for "who sleeps anymore" ( which he produced), and a few weeks back, he released his solo album "Addicted" ( that u can download for free, it’s hot)

Everything that I have heard from Nicatyne and his group (The Insomniaks & Joel) has been a breath of creative fresh air, when I think the industry is lacking originality the most.

Name? Nicolas Gwyn Location? Natomas, Sacramento, California How long have u been making music? Learned to play the drums when I was two started making beats around nine years old. I produced my first album when I was ten called hot garbage and cheese. What is your music background? I pretty much grew up in musical family.

All of my aunts sing, my mom sings, and my father plays the piano, and ran a studio when I was younger. I also grew up in the church, so I was always on the drums and playing on the organs and stuff getting kicked off for actually trying to play instead of messing around. I got my first keyboard when I was like 4 or five. It was a casio cz-101, I still have it. It’s a classic. But then one day my dad bought me a Yamaha djx, I figured out how to program on accident and its bean a wrap when it comes to me and beats ever since then. I have just been moving up since.

What equipment are u using?

Just Reason 4.0, Cool Edit Pro, and that’s it really. I have other stuff, but there’s really no need to talk about it because it just collects dust and looks cool, but is never ever used.

What are you currently working on?

Alot…. me and illecism are working on a second Insomniaks project exclusively for onsmash.com. Me and jo-el are working on League of Ordinary Gentlemen vol.2. .You prolly haven’t heard the first one. but it wasn’t that good anyway.. Secondhand Smoke of course…and some other stuff. I have alot going on right now.. I just finished "Addiction" the day, and I’m already working on something else.

Describe your production style?

I really don’t know what my style is…. just weird I guess..I just make what I feel like making. I’m not trying to impress anybody but myself, so I make whatever I feel like making at the time, no particular style…unless you wanna give it its own genre called weird nutty norf music…or sertified street slappage.
