Eddie Kendricks was a phenomenal soul and disco singer from the early 60’s to mid 80’s. Performing with the likes of The Temptations, The Supremes and being sampled for Alicia Keys and Common he is undoubtedly a gift to music.

Eddie Kendricks with The Temptations

Passing away in 1992, aged just 52, he left a host of soulful tracks that are perfect for sample-heads experimentalists alike. Here’s an exclusive taster for HHM, Eddie Kendricks – The Newness Is Gone.
Note: There is a file embedded within this post, please visit this post to download the file.

Titled Bad Mother Funker, you know what your getting. With so many sample friendly parts; including a nice drum break, horn sections, funk guitars, vocal quotes and a very nice bassline your sure to find something you like!

As far as I can tell this sample hasn’t been used in any big industry tracks, which is quite suprising given the popularity of the artist among people like Just Blaze, The Beastie Boys and Dr. Dre. So, here we have an amazing sample, that so far is unherd of to the general public, and is ichting to be sampled by someone who can turn it into a hit!

As always, please post up your flips in the Forums here to get some honest, friendly feedback.

Nina-Simone Sinner Man

Her soulful lyrics, amazing compositions and sheer passion made her the amazing success she became from the 50’s right up until the late 90’s. Although she has been sampled and covered by many people over the past few decades, this sample we have for you today is so packed full of material that your guaranteed to make something unique and interesting!

The sample is entitled Sinnerman, and derives from an old church song her mother used to sing when she was a Minister, to help promote the confession of sins. The sample is extremely unique and can only be classified as a ‘Spiritual’

One of the more famous examples of this track being sampled was created by Kanye West for Talib Kweli, which ended up forming the track Get By off the Quality album. Another big name that saw use of the track is Timbaland, who cleverly used the similarity for the words Sinnerman and Timbaland to great use to create his track, Oh Timbaland. As well as being sampled this track has appeared in many feature films and television programs over the years, some of which are; Oceans 12, Miami Vice, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Scrubs and Life On Mars.

There is no doubt that this is an amazing track with many change ups, breakdowns and vocal snippets for everyone to break down and get extremely creative with. As always, please don’t hesitate to upload your ‘flip’ to the Hip-Hop Makers forums for some honest feedback.

Anthony, even though he was signed in 1975 and continued to work withinanothony-white-lp music right up to 1989/1990, didn’t release as much material as you would expect. Only completing two solo albums one in 1976 and the next the following year in 1977. From then on there was a massive twelve year gap before his next release, which was in fact a joint effort with Paul Simpson on a single track called “Walk Away From Love” released in 1989.

So, as you just read not only does this man have great sampling material, he is also somewhat a rare find for producers nowadays.

His debut album however, Could It Be Magic, released in 1976 was distributed by the Philadelphia International label. On this album you will find our sample of the week, Stop And Think It Over, which in true Anthony White form was just made to be flipped (sampled)!

So, here you are, Anthony White – Stop And Think It Over

The track in question is from Niraj Chag, who is a fairly new artist and despite contrary to popular belief, is actually from the UK. His style consists of merging classical Indian music with modern recording techniques to create a unique and almost atmospheric sound.

http://hiphopmakers.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Niraj_Chag_Kanya.mp3

He has to-date only released one album entitled Along the Dusty Road which was praised locally for its originality, received airplay on BBC Radio and also was selected as the iTunes free download of June 2006. As well as his studio work he created his first musical ‘Baiju Bawra’, created original soundtracks for productions such as Sex and the City and also for plays, including Rafta, Rafta. However, his most notable achievement to date is that he put together an eclectic score for the official Olympic Torch event, on London’s South Bank featuring a massive 600 vocalists, opera singers and a 40-piece brass band. It seems that there is a bright future in store for this young, talented musician.

The sample we have for you today comes from his debut album and is entitled Kanya. According to his Official website this is “A track about youth. Using classical Indian dance (Kathak) vocabulary (here recited by Gauri Tripathi). I had a lot of fun playing with Gaurijis vocals – things were chopped, edited and put through filters to get the intricate rhythmic (vocal) layers I wanted for this track.”

So, without further ado I give you Niraj Chag – Kanya.

Hi everyone, I’m Lucas from Makeitlikeapro.com and as part of the merger between these two sites we have decided to share many of the resources…including my Sample Of The Week!

So, here we go. This 1st weeks sample is from the one and only Rose Royce. http://hiphopmakers.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Rose_Royce_-_Would_You_Please_Be_Mine_30_sec.mp3

Rose is what you could call the ‘Crown Jewel’ of sampled artists. Her samples have created great hip-hop songs such as: Camron’ – Oh Boy, Beastie Boys – Shake Your Rump, Dr. Dre – Big Ego’s and many more. Also, her track ‘Car Wash’ was sampled for the theme of the hit movie ‘Sharks Tale’ by Missy Elliot and Christina Aguilera. However, it could be seen as more of a remix than a sample. This is because the arrangement of the entire track is exactly the same as the original by Rose Royce. Yet, because there are new drums laced on top, it is claimed as a sample None-the-less, Rose is defiantly on every sampler’s shortlist of artists.

Now, the Rose Royce track we have is entitled ‘Would You Please Be Mine’ and is native to the ‘Golden Touch’ Album released in 1980. The Album was produced originally by Norman Whitfield. Who in his own right is arguably one of the greatest sound creators and innovators of 70`s Soul. With his stock of excellent session musicians such as Melvin Ragin, Aaron Smith and Earl van Dyke, he was competent of leaving his mark on any of his projects, whether it was with artist such as Undisputed Truth, The Temptations, David Ruffin or Rose Royce herself.

Norman was also an innovative producer within the industry. His “recycling technique” – recording hits like ‘Superstar’ or ‘Papa Was A Rollin` Stone’ again and again in new versions with different bands- revealed him as one of the first producers using the mix as an instrument of interpretation as we know it today. His way of arranging and producing was unique. His introduction of using beat boxing instead of drums not only on tracks like ‘1990’ or ‘Big John Is My Name’ is so far ahead, that you would have had to look on the record sleeves again to believe when they were even recorded! No doubt: “Produced by Norman Whitfield” – one of the best certificates of quality a record could get during his time.

Now today his productions are being sampled throughout the world of Hip-Hop to create newer, fresher pieces of music. So, with that in mind…here’s the sample for ya’ll to mess with!

Note: There is a file embedded within this post, please visit this post to download the file.

Have fun guys! And don’t forget to post up your flips in the forums!
